ADAM FEINSTEIN recommends the following books on autism. They are listed in alphabetical order by first-named author.
Nobody Nowhere - This first of nine books by the celebrated Australian autistic author, Donna Williams, is full of frank and valuable insights about living with the disorder. Highly recommended.
Somebody Somewhere - Donna Williams' second book is just as revealing as her first, and also became an international bestseller. In it, as she herself says, she becomes exposed to "a world of different, forgotten citizens of the world" (adults with undiagnosed autism). Highly recommended.
Like Colour to the Blind - This, Donna Williams' third autobiographical work, largely concerns her relationship with Ian, who is also autistic. The book exposes three areas she feels strongly about: the fragmentation of visual perceptual disorders, the importance of augmented and alternative communication systems for voiceless people and the search for selfhood buried underneath stored learning. Moving and very funny. Highly recommended.
Everyday Heaven: Journeys Beyond the Stereotypes of Autism - Donna Williams' fourth autobiographical book is as impressive as the first three. It largely deals with two processes: her discovery of sexuality and her sense of loss. Touching and painfully honest. Highly recommended.
Exposure Anxiety: The Invisible Cage - An Exploration of Self-protection Responses in the Autism Spectrum - An intriguing look at co-morbid anxiety and impulse control disorders affecting those on the autistic spectrum. Williams offers an innovative new approach to working with some of the most challenged people on the autistic spectrum. Recommended
Autism: An Inside-out Approach - An Innovative Look at the Mechanics of Autism and Its Developmental Cousins - A bestseller in the field of developmental disabilities, this book dramatically altered the way professionals worked with those on the autistic spectrum. It provides detailed suggestions on strategies to reduce the burdens on people with autism and, from an insider's perspective, challenges the stereotypes surrounding the disorder. Incisively written, with much healthy debunking of myths. Highly recommended.
Autism and Sensing: The Unlost Instinct - Donna Williams addresses the question of how things are sensed as a person with autism and proposes a new perspective. Thought-provoking.
