THERE HAVE always been stereotypes about autism:

"They're all middle class, silent, boys."

    Well, today we know they are in all social classes.
    One third have speech, even if it is "dysfunctional," and many of those who are "silent" often mutter or whisper to themselves, hum or sing and others who are completely verbally silent speak through their actions and noises or through typing, assisted or not, signing or picture/object exchange systems.
    A significant percentage of people with autism are female.  In some classes, female people with autism outnumber the males ...
