TERESINA SIEUNARINE, executive
director of the Autistic Society of Trinidad and Tobago, describes the
situation facing families with autism there, in this article written
especially for LOOKING UP
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago: In early 1988, my husband and I
arranged for our son, Kester, to attend a Child Development Centre in
Florida, USA to find out why he was such a difficult child with
language delay. After a series of consultations with a variety of
medical personnel, we were given the diagnosis of autism. I look back
on this experience as one of the worst times in my life.
The way we were given this diagnosis did not help the
situation and, when we asked about reading material, we were told to
buy what turned out to be just a medical text book.
On our return to Trinidad, I felt helpless and
hopeless. I learned that many persons, including medical and
educational personnel, did not know about autism or feared telling me
about it ...
